The team expands…and so does the game

aaa

These past dozen days have been extremely productive game wise. I am blogging to bring everyone up to speed on some of the more noticeable developments. The first of which being that I am happy to announce a new member of the team: we now have a graphic artist! Along with myself and our modeler we now have a core team of 3 members along with the other people in the TSA providing us with help. So what does this mean? It means that the game is going to be getting prettier. We had a meeting yesterday and are all hard at work putting together a story and characters to go along with the game play. This is going to be the real deal. Along those lines, the game now has multiple levels we are working on, and plan to have 5 playable levels when we launch the beta in March. Thats right: to coincide with our unveiling of the game at the state TSA competition we will be releasing to public download the same game that the judges there get to play. There will be more info about the specifics of the game coming soon. Stay tuned!

Realism – The Magnetic Fields

4376110If you were to ask me what my favorite genre of music was I would have to answer folk music. Now I like pretty much every genre, but folk has a special place in my heart for its simple beauty and ability to convey emotion like rock music or pop cannot. So when I heard that The Magnetic Field’s  new album was going to be a “folk” album I naturally began looking forward to it. When I finally sat down and listened to it however, it wasn’t what I was expecting. It isnt so much a “folk” album as it is an acoustic album.

Distractions (but development nonetheless)

Capture

So it has been a while since my last blog post. I could attribute this to laziness, but instead I will blame school. We had exams last week, causing me to divert my focus away from blogging. But, now that exams are over, and I have gotten settled into the new semester I am happy to report that blogging will be continuing as normal again. I have quite a few music reviews I want to get done, including the new Magnetic Fields, Los Campesinos! , Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Beach House. But right now I want to talk about the game.

More progress (Yes, it IS happening!)

"OMG guys, a fly came outta nowhere! Launch all-- wait, what's THAT back there?"

Hello again, everyone. I haven’t posted as much as I should have been because I’ve been busy throwing that wonderful image together. My computer froze overnight rendering it the first time around. Don’t worry, I’m used to it.

Of the Blue Colour of the Sky – Ok Go

5099962660020_M

When I asked my friend what his opinion of  the new Ok Go album was he told me it sounded ”more like the Flaming Lips.” I naturally took this as a good thing, but when I asked if that meant the album was good the response I got was less assuring. He told me he wasn’t sure. So naturally I had to listen for myself. This is actually my first Ok Go album, as I had skipped over their debut due to less than stellar ratings. After listening to OTBCOTS I am not sure they have won me over as a fan.

Progress (its happening)

gmae1

On Monday I posted about my plans to learn XNA and create a functioning Star Fox clone. After six days of work I am happy to announce that I have made a lot of progress. I have gone from drawing 2D triangles in directx to rendering models and terrain. As you can see in the above screenshot of the current version of the game, the models that my friend made are part of the game now. Last night I was able to get collision detection working. With this I was able to put together a rudimentary ”game” where the player avoids the balloons to get to the end of the plain.

Avatar, a commentary

Jake_flying_Great_Leonoptyrex

I finally saw Avatar last night. Yes, I know I am about a month late to the party, but better later than never. As most of you already know Avatar is James Cameron’s latest film that has recorded record box office numbers.  Most interesting however is the 3D technology introduced with the film. A lot of people have discussed its importance to the future of film making and its validity beyond a gimmick. If you had asked me yesterday morning I, like a lot of other people would have passed it off as being simply a gimmick, but after last night I have become a believer.

Transference – Spoon

spoon-transference-300x300

A few months ago when Spoon announced Transference I as really excited. Between this and Contra, January was shaping up to be an amazing month for music. Then I learned that for this new album Spoon had decided to forgo bringing in a producer to help them with the album. I began to worry. Part of what had made their last album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga so good was the added polish that I feared would be missing without a producer on Transference. I was right: Transference is a much less polished album than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. There are no standout singles like “The Underdog.” Once you accept that there is  great album to be discovered.
